Here is one that came in with a question:
It is questionable whether increasing parking fees in Bethesda will help the Montgomery county budget issue. As I understand it, all monies raised in Bethesda have to stay in Bethesda. That is how BUP gets most of their budget money. Can you ask this question of Roger Berliner?

Just received this from Bill Frick and wanted to share with the community — some good news there but still waiting to hear what our delegation is doing to address our water quality issues:
Dear Friends,
What a weekend for Maryland policy! Two terrific bills passed through the House on a busy Saturday session, and I wanted to share the good news as soon as possible.
It’s a great privilege to serve you in the Maryland General Assembly. If you have any concerns or constituent service needs, please do not hesitate to contact me at bill@billfrick.com or at (301) 858-3454.

| Direct Shipment of Wine
After years of delays, the House finally passed legislation to facilitate shipment of wine directly to consumers. The bill is not perfect, as it is limited to wineries only — thus excluding rare wine retailers and some wine clubs that Marylanders would like to join. Nothwitshtanding its flaws, the bill represents progress that has been far too long in coming. |

Accountability and Transparency in Tax Expenditures
Today the House also passed my bill to improve our state budget process. According to estimates, Maryland spends nearly $4B a year through a combination of tax credits, exemptions and deductions. In many instances, we have little information on whether the expenditures are achieving the result that they were adopted to achieve. If adopted by the Senate, House Bill 620 will force tax credits to expire unless they are re-authorized following a cost-benefit review. In these tough times, we can’t afford to spend money – through appropriations or tax credits – without justification. |
| Best regards,

We received this email/ letter from a reader and believe that their intention was to spark a discussion on this issue. Please read and let us know what you think:
Message Body:
Sent to Montgomery County Council Members:
Good Morning,
Yesterday evening I parked in a BETHESDA parking garage across the street from the Louisiana Kitchen (where I dined with a couple of my friends).
At 7:00 PM, I filled the meter with $2.00 worth of quarters to secure two hours of parking. When I returned to my vehicle, I had a $45.00 parking citation on my windshield. The ticket was issued at 9:01 PM.
Yes, I was delinquent by one minute and my total cost for parking in BETHESDA reached $47.00. Parenthetically, photo-enforced speeding tickets cost less! And I thought speeding was more dangerous!?! I’m wondering if any of you have considered the deleterious impact that these extravagant fines are having on BETHESDA businesses. Specifically, fewer restaurant customers and fewer parking meter customers.
I also wonder if you have thought about less draconian and more enlightened approaches to handle parking violations. It probably goes without saying that I am far less inclined to have dinner in BETHESDA than ever before.
Finally, I suspect that, with or without broadcasting my story, more and more people are reaching the same conclusion.
Respectfully,
J

Friends,
Spring looks like it has been put on hold for a few days — the weekend looks like it will be chilly. However, there is an upside — one last opportunity to make a hearty soup before the warm weather is upon us.
Check out some of our past receipes if the mood for soup grabs you and if you need a pot for your masterpiece check out the options available in Bethesda including in the Lane:

This house on Elm Street, which we’ve written about before on several occasions, is still boarded-up and seemingly empty, despite a car regularly parked outside. Does anyone have any news or info about this property? I’m wondering if it is being used for some purpose related to the current construction of new buildings on the same street?
