At about 3pm conditions abruptly changed to heavy rain with thunder and lightening to sleet and then to snow. As light is fading there is a notable difference on the ground. Here are two pictures of the same view over Battery Park taken at 3pm and then at 5pm. And, IT IS STILL COMING DOWN!

Temperatures are hovering just above freezing (currently at 34 degrees) which means the light snow and freezing rain we had last night is now SLUSH!
As temperatures drop the slush may well re– freeze and become ice. So please TAKE CARE. And in the mean time, when waiting to cross the road, stand back or be sprayed!!!!
Here is a picture of the slushy mess from earlier

Friends — Living Social has a deal for our friends at Uptown Deli – if you spend $10 you get a $20 voucher. Check it out here. But remember you don’t have long to act! Here is a part of the Living Social description for those of you who have missed our past stories on Uptown Deli:
“Bethesda’s first authentic Jewish New York-Style deli. Pay $10 and get $20 worth of food and drink; that includes, some of the area’s best corned beef, brisket, turkey breast, potato latkes, and Coney Island knishes. Pop into this eatery and you’ll see that authentic is the name of the game here: Some of the selections, such as the smoked fish, New York-style cheesecake, and bialys, are imported from Manhattan.”

This was interesting — Pebblebrook Hotel Trust secured a $36 million loan for the Doubletree in Bethesda. We need to do a story on the Doubletree and all that is happening there…..perhaps we will get that out next week.

Just wanted to pass this along:

Friends — wrap up warm — it is REALLY Cold out there!! I don’t think the temperature is going to get above freezing today and if you have to be out and about, you will need some different ways to keep warm.
SO — in the spirit of warming up as you move around out town here is the Bethesda Actually Top 5 list of Winter Warmers for January 2011 (feel free to email your own to us at bethesdaactually@gmail.com and we will share them):
1. Head over to Zen Tara Tea for a pot of the warm stuff…..perhaps you could try their Chai Mate Tea….it is very nice!
2. Visit Satsuma in Old Bethesda for lunch and dig into a bowl of their Ramen Noodle Soup (vegetarian and meat options)
3. Hard Times — their menu is designed for this type of weather…..perhaps have something with a little kick in it for dinner!
4. A Winter Warming Drink at the Harp and Fiddle (a hot toddie perhaps?) – just don’t drink and drive!
5. Head over to Barnes and Nobles for a day of looking at books, working via Wi-Fi in their cafe and enjoying the warm food and beverages.

Our friends at Bella Bethesda have a wonderful event coming up in time for Valentines Day!!
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, Bella Bethesda has its sights on sharing the love with those less fortunate and will kick off its “Cut It For a Cause” campaign on February 12. This year marks the fourth annual celebration of the week-long event to benefit Locks of Love. The salon welcomes those who are able to give at least 10 inches of hair, to visit the salon throughout the week to make their donation and in exchange receive a complimentary cut and blow dry. Those interested in helping a child in need, but aren’t yet ready to donate can still participate (and receive a free cut!) by visiting the salon to sign the pledge board and donate later this year. The salon hopes to collect 250 inches of hair so every individual who can donate makes a difference!
Please get the word out and help support this wonderful event!!
